(CNN) -- Millions of people download 99-cent games for their iPhones. An increasing number of Web sites offer free online games. And consumer spending is down amid a global recession.
Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime demonstrates a Wii game at last year's E3 show.
Is this the time to be promoting $200 video-gaming consoles and $60 games?
But that's what's going on this week in Los Angeles, California, where the once-booming video game industry will show off its newest hardware and titles at the Electronic Entertainment Expo.
As the largest annual trade show for gaming enthusiasts, E3 is where the big players roll out their splashiest releases. Industry experts say Microsoft is expected Monday to unveil new motion-tracking technology, called Xbox Fluid, that will let gamers use their bodies to act out what their characters do in a video game.

The Warrior represents the same basic idea as that of the Timber Wolf, but it’s only the circular set of keys and you use it alongside your existing keyboard. It’s heavier and sturdier than the Timber Wolf with a softer touch to the keys so I liked it better. The same problems exist with using it on games you’ve trained on but it’s easy to acclimate to the controls on new games. The problem with the Warrior is that since it doesn’t come attached to its own keyboard you need to have the space to set it up. Depending on the game, you could just move your existing keyboard and use the Warrior exclusively while gaming (it includes an Esc button and volume controls, which are not on the Timber Wolf’s gaming area). But setting it up alongside a keyboard and a mouse requires a wide desk...More...
The newly released iLimb is the first prosthetic hand to have fully functional motorized digits that move and bend independently, its makers say. Electrodes taped to the skin transmit signals to tiny motors that power the fingers.
Previous artificial hands had only a thumb and forefinger that worked in a clawlike grasping action. But the new device allows amputees to carry out more delicate movements such as peeling a banana, typing on a computer, or eating with a knife and fork.
The iLimb is also covered by a semitransparent "cosmesis" that is computer modeled to look like human skin.
The technology has been tested by a number of people, including US soldiers who lost limbs in the Iraq war.More...
Sony-Ericsson has updated its line of Bluetooth watches with the MBW-150 range. The main difference is aesthetic. These are watches you might actually want to wear, whereas the the old MBW-100 was a watch you would only wear if you wanted to get beaten up by the nerd haters.
Aside from looking good, the watches bring some degree of subtlety to modern gadget usage: The OLED display will show the current tune playing on a Sony-Ericsson music phone and you can control volume and skip tracks. The watch will also display caller ID and SMS notifications, and a vibrating alert notifies you of incoming calls. Pretty much any SE phone from the last few years is supported. The MBW-150 Bluetooth watch costs $200.

» The Most Affordable Dream Car
(December 2006)
Students from Cranfield University, one of Western Europe’s largest academic centres for strategic and applied research development and design, have been awarded the innovation prize at The Société des Ingénieurs de l'Automobile’s (SIA), Styling and Technical competition for designing ‘The Most Affordable Dream Car’. The Dscar has four wheels positioned in a diamond shape around the car’s chassis and apparently it handles like a go-kart. Designed primarily for extreme sports lovers and for weekend or track day use only, the car provides a very different ride – it’s very light, just 500kg, and powered by a Toyota 3 cylinder 68bhp engine. The DScar is made from mass produced car parts, so can be manufactured very easily and economically. A panel of international experts recognised DScar for its radically different diamond shaped design, unique style and unusual driving experience...More...

Sony-Ericsson has released the XPERIA X1, its first true touchscreen-focused cellphone. Following a deal with Microsoft, the handset is Sony-Ericsson's first device to use Windows Mobile for its OS but also uses a custom interface of "XPERIA panels" rather than the default Microsoft front-end: users simply tap panels with their fingers to access calling...More...
